Facts are interesting and we see them as part of learning and gaining general knowledge. But there are some facts that are not only fascinating but are also linked to our own lifestyles, directly or indirectly. We can impact those facts by altering our habits or just by being more responsible.  We have compiled some of such facts for you about water. You have the power to impact them, for the better. We will tell you how.

Do you know how much water is flushed down the toilet?

FACT: Older toilets can use 3.5, 5, or even up to 7 gallons of water with every flush. A gallon is about 16 glasses of water. This means that old toilets flush down the drain 112 glasses of water with each flush.

How can you IMPACT this FACT? Reduce your toilet water usage by regularly checking for and fixing leaks, retrofitting older toilets, or installing a new toilet.

Do you know how much of the world’s water is drinkable?

FACT: While nearly 70 percent of the world is covered by water, only 2.5 percent is fresh. Even then, just 1 percent of our freshwater is accessible.

How can you IMPACT this FACT? Use freshwater responsibly and learn how to effectively conserve, manage, and distribute the water we have.

Do you know how much water is used to mass-produce consumer goods?

FACT: It takes up to 2,900 gallons of water to make a single pair of jeans.

How can you IMPACT this FACT? Don’t fall for consumerism and recycle as much as you can.  De-clutter your life, save money and save water.

Do you know how many people don’t have access to safe drinking water?

FACT: 1 in 9 people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water. For every $1 invested in water and sanitation, there is an economic return of between $3 and $34.

This simply means that improved water and sanitation leads to – reduced incidence of water-related diseases, saved time spent walking miles to get water, reduced child mortality and a drastic fall in drop out rates from school – translating into long term economic benefits for the beneficiaries.

How can you IMPACT this FACT? Donate to responsible projects working on water and sanitation facilities in underserved areas.

Do you know how much water is used to package bottled water?

FACT: It takes 1.39 liters to make one liter of water. However, considering the entire production and delivery process, it is estimated that it takes 3 liters of feed water and an oil consumption equivalent to 1/4 liter of oil to manufacture 1 liter of bottled water.

How can you IMPACT this FACT? Drink tap water instead of buying water plastic bottles. In Toronto, and most developed cities, you get good quality water at your tap. In developing countries, most people walk around 5 kilometers to get water that’s not always potable.

How much water you consume in the washroom?

FACT: A person in Canada uses 350 liters of water per day while in developing countries they use only 20 liters.

How can you IMPACT this FACT? Try to take shorter showers. Also, don’t leave the water running while you brush your teeth.

Do you know how much water is used to produce the meat you eat?

FACT: 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce just 1 pound of beef.

How can you IMPACT this FACT? If we move toward ending our meat consumption and replace it with equivalent crop products, we save about 800 liters of water per day.
